The Camino de Santiago is the journey that has been walked by millions of pilgrims. With this holiday, you will follow the whole way from Pamplona, in the Spanish side of the Pyrenees, to the stunning cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where St James is believed to be buried. This route will lead you through breath-taking scenery as well as major cities, such as Pamplona, Logrono, Leon, Burgos and Santiago.
Your way on the Camino de Santiago is made easier by clear sign posting. The famous arrow and the scallop shell will show you the way. Also included in our holiday pack are detailed walking notes and maps making navigation even easier.
Although sometimes physically demanding, it only requires a reasonable level of fitness however if you feel tired and need a rest, there are bars and restaurants along the way.

From here you will descend to Puente de la Reina. This is where the French and Aragonese Ways to Santiago come together. During the second part of the day you will once again see another change in the landscape with delightful villages, vineyards and red earth crop fields becoming more abundant.

49km, +768 m / -812 m: Today will see you continue through the vineyards and the red earth of the region on another day of delightful cycling. This part of the French Way also passes some of the most famous landmarks of the entire Camino, such as the Monasterio of Irache with its bodega and the steep climb to Villamayor de Monjardin. The day finishes in Logrondo which is the capital city of the world famous wine producing region of La Rioja.
Lodging: Set next to the River Ebro in central Logroño just 350 metres from the Santa Maria de la Redonda Church, this hotel offers a café-bar, 24-hour reception and a spa which features a sauna, hot tub and offers a selection of treatments, including massage. 57km, +858 m / -628 m: The fourth day of your trip will see you pass through the countryside of La Rioja on pleasant red earth tracks. As you pass by vineyards, your first stop is Navarrete, a 12th century twon, built by the "Knights of the Holy Sepulchre". Here you can admire the fabulous Baroque Church of "La Ascension". You will see the Cantabrian mountain range to the north, and La Demanda Mountain to the south. En-route, you will have the chance to visit the Monastery of "Valvanera" deep in the middle of the "Sierra de la Demanda".Finally, arriving in Santo Domingo de la Calzada, one of the most beautiful town en-route to Santiago.

Today is a short cycle along relatively easy terrain, which should allow you plenty of time to explore the wonderful city of Burgos. Burgos stills holds much of its medieval grandeur and also boasts the Cathedral of Burgos. The Cathedral is considered to be a masterpiece of Spanish Gothic Architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are also impressive walks along the banks of the Duero and Arlanza rivers, which complement a visit to the cities historic quarter nicely.

However as you are still on the Castilla meseta there are still many great views to be seen including todays destination of Astorga, which can be seen down in the valley below. Astorga is a former Roman stronghold which includes some great sites to visit, such as, the cathedral, the old city walls and the Episcopal Palace.
Lodging: Our first choice is centrally located beside San Bartolomé Church in Astorga on the Santiago Pilgrimage Route and just 10 minutes’ walk from Astorga Cathedral. The Camino climbs up to the famous Cruz del Hierro (the Iron Cross) which sits at 1500m above sea level. This climb offers breathtaking views over the surrounding areas. The abundance of natural scenery, combined with the rich history of the towns, make this a fantastic way to finish the section. Your final destination is Ponferrada which is an energetic city with a beautiful medieval centre.

After leaving Melide you will travel along the types of tracks which you have become accustomed to over the last couple of days. As the Camino rises and lowers over the small hills you will come to the nicest part of todays cycle which is El Monte de Gozo (Mount of Joy). Your final destination of Santiago de Compostela is visible in the distance from here!

If you wish to stay in the area, we can recommend the following for you: - Explore the magnificent historic centre of Santiago, or - Continue your holiday with us along the "Camino Fisterra" (Finisterre Way), staying overnight in a 2* hotel which is actually a lighthouse, or - take a bus to Fisterra. (Bus to fisterra: 9am, 10am, bus back in Santiago 16:45 & 19:00. takes 3hours) or - Visit the untouched sandy beaches and coves along the west coast. With incredibly few tourists, you are certain to have a very individual experience. Ask us for more information.

We aim to offer you the best experiences and unforgettable memories on a holiday where your desire for a challenge, comfort and safety are our priority. As the abilities of everybody are different, it’s important that you decide on a holiday which best suits your own needs and capabilities. You should take some time to look over our grading system so you can decide which holiday is best for you!
How do we grade?
When grading our holidays we take 3 main factors into consideration: Distance, Gradient and Trail Type (i.e. mountain track, forest road, surfaced road, etc.)
Our Easy walking and cycling holidays are best for families with young children. With older children, experience and fitness level should be considered when deciding on a holiday.
Leisurely(1,2)
• Time: Under 5 hours per day on average.
• Gradient: Gentle, no steep climbs
• Trail Type: Walking path, easily accessible
• Suitable for: Everybody. Some easy preparation walks should increase your enjoyment.
Stimulating(3,4)
• Time: 5 to 7 hours / less than 20km per day on average
• Gradient: Up to 1000m ascent per day on average, possibility of some steep climbing
• Trail Type: Walking paths, mountain trails, not technically difficult
• Suitable for: Moderate level of fitness required. Some weekend walks of around 3-4 hours should help your preparation.
A Challenge (5)
• Time: Days can be over 7 hours / 20km
• Gradient: Days can be more than 1000m, some steep climbing
• Trail Type: Walking paths, mountain trails, can be technically difficult
• Suitable for: Good level of fitness required. Previous experience would be best. Regular weekend walks of 4-5 hours or more are advisable in the months leading up to your holiday. These should include some mountain walks.

1 - Bilbao: A large amount of the passenger traffic at Bilbao Airport comes from internal flights and you can fly from Bilbao to any of the following Spanish Airports: A Coruna, Alicante, Barcelona, Badajoz, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Jerez, Lanzarote, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, Tenerife, Valencia and Vigo. There are also European flights to Brussels, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Lisbon, Milan, Munich, Paris and Stuttgart. At the moment easyJet, Iberia and AerLingus fly from the UK and Ireland to Bilbao. easJjet offer daily flights to Bilbao from London Stansted Airport, Iberia flies from Gatwick or Heathrow via Madrid and AerLingus operate out of Dublin.
2 - Santander: Ryanair are the only low-cost airline that currently offer direct flights to Santander. They offer flights from London Stansted and now Dublin, Frankfurt, Milan and Rome as well as Reus and Madrid in Spain. Iberia offer a good selection of internal flights from Alicante, Barcelona, Gran Canaria, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Seville and Valencia.

To the start of the walk in Pamplona:
1 - From Bilbao: direct bus to Pamplona (takes 2hrs) with Burundesa bus company, 10 departures a day.
2 - From Santander: direct bus to Pamplona (takes 2hrs) with Burundesa bus company, 2 departures a day.
3 - From Madrid: bus to Pamplona with Conda bus company, 10 departures a day. There is also a train from Madrid train station to Pamplona train station. 9 departures a day.
Fly Back home from Santiago:
Shuttle buses from Santiago city center to the airport (20mins):
Ryanair and Iberia/BA fly direct from Santiago de Compostela tothe UK. Ryanair fly to Stansted, Nottingham East Midlands and Liverpool and Aer Lingus operates to Dublin. Many of the flights that leave the airport are flying to internal Spanish destinations. Iberia and Spanair offer the best selection of flights and you can fly to and from Santiago De Compostela to: Frankfurt, Paris and Rome and Barcelona, Bilbao, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Madrid, Malaga, Palma, Seville, Tenerife, and Valencia. Ryanair now operates a year round service between Madrid and Santiago de Compostela, twice a day.
