Cevennes Walking holiday

From Le Puy en Velay to Ales - ""

On September 22nd 1878 the young Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson left Le Monastier sur Gazeille (Haute Loire) on foot with his donkey Modestine. He travelled 220 km over 12 days before arriving in St Jean du Gard (Gard). He obviously wrote of his adventures and published his travel diary “Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes” in 1879. Although less famous than “Treasure Island” or “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” it has been loved by generations of readers.

Following the same route as Stevenson you too can experience a similar adventure, even to the point of taking a donkey with you. The Cevennes National Park, one of the most stunning areas of natural beauty in all of France, overlooks the Mediterranean Sea (on an average elevation of over 1,000m) and traverses 3 regions (Auvergne, Rh´ne-Alpes, Languedoc-Roussillon) and 4 departments (Haute Loire, Ard¨che, Lozre, Gard) each offering different countryside’s, culture, history and gastronomy.

We would recommend that you fly into Lyon, and then transfer to Le Puy en Velay (625m). Details on how to commute from Lyon airport to Le Puy en Velay can be found in our “Additional Information” section. This also includes an option to be transferred directly there by CaminoWays. Le Puy is a lovely little town (20,000 inhabitants approximately) and the capital of the Velay area, and while your walk starts tomorrow from Le Monastier sur Gazeille (930m), CaminoWays still caters for your every need in Le Puy. This way you can relax after your travels and maybe even buy some last minute things. Town: Internet, ATM, shops, all facilities.

21km, 5h15, +761 m / -459 m. We will transfer you from Le Puy en Velay (625m) to Le Monastier sur Gazeille (930m) in the morning (included) from the very spot where, in 1878, the locals waved goodbye to Stevenson. In those days he was warned about “wolves, cold, thieves and death” but rest assured, a walk in the Cevennes today is quite tame. It’s hard to believe that the small river in Goudet (785m), who’s source is in near-by Mont Gerbier des Joncs, is actually the Loire – the longest river in France (1012km). Town, Le Bouchet Saint Nicolas: Internet, ATM, shops, and all facilities.

23km, 6h00, +271 m / -563 m. Today is the last day in the Velay area and after crossing the Allier river you will be in Langogne (915m, pop 3000). It is here where the locals will tell you of the “ferocious beast”, a wolf that supposedly terrified the inhabitants a long time ago and today survives in their memory. Langogne, one of the main gateways to the Cevennes, is a lovely town with an 11th-century Romanesque church and all the amenities a visitor needs. Town: Internet, ATM, shops, all facilities.

19km, 4h45, +672 m / -787 m. Today is a relatively easy 3 hours walk to reach Luc (971m) where, in 1380, the 3 lords of the area of Luc won a battle against an aggressive English force. Before leaving why not visit the impressive castle! In Rogleton (990m) you have 2 options, go directly to your hotel (45 min walk) or continue another 8 kms to the “Trappe de Notre Dame des Neiges” (1091m, 2hr45). Option 2 will result in a walking day of around 7h30 and 27km in total. Town: Internet, ATM, shops, all facilities.

28 km, 7h00, +683 m / -1034 m. Welcome to the Camisards country! In historical terms, this is a very interesting part of the trail for it was here that the Camisards war between Protestant groups and Catholic missionaries began at the start of the 18th century. Florac (546m, pop 2100) is the centre of the Cevennes National Park, classified by UNESCO.

20.5 km, 6h00, +1011 m / -1334 m. Today, you will walk some of the way on a paved road, “Corniche des Cevennes”, that was built for the military during the reign of Louis XIV. As you descend from the Cevennes into the Midi, you will be able to appreciate a marked change in the landscape. Forests and rocky surroundings begin to give way to vineyards. Some stay on in Gard for an extra night as it is a pleasant town to explore. There are steam train rides from the station at weekends and several museums to visit. Town: ATM, shops, all facilities.

As the abilities of everybody are different, it’s important that you decide on a holiday which best suits your own needs and capabilities. You should take some time to look over our grading system so you can decide which holiday is best for you!

How do we grade?
When grading our holidays we take 3 main factors into consideration: Distance, Gradient and Trail Type (i.e. mountain track, forest road, surfaced road, etc.)
Our Easy walking and cycling holidays are best for families with young children. With older children, experience and fitness level should be considered when deciding on a holiday.

• Gradient: Gentle, no steep climbs
• Trail Type: Walking path, easily accessible
• Suitable for: Everybody. Some easy preparation walks should increase your enjoyment.

• Gradient: Up to 1000m ascent per day on average, possibility of some steep climbing
• Trail Type: Walking paths, mountain trails, not technically difficult
• Suitable for: Moderate level of fitness required. Some weekend walks of around 3-4 hours should help your preparation.

• Gradient: Days can be more than 1000m, some steep climbing
• Trail Type: Walking paths, mountain trails, can be technically difficult
