From Arras to Laon - "Along the battlefields"

The third section of the Via Francigena continues through North of France rural landscape, from Arras to Laon. Even if the section is quite long, the way you will walk is not hard and is easily accessible for everyone. You will mainly follow quiet road or farm tracks, through 3 French departments: Pas-de-Calais, Somme and Aisne. Throughout the history, this route has been in the middle of a lot of wars, like Hundred Years War, Napoleon’s Campaigns and above all the World War I. Thus, following the example of Bapaume or Peronne, the cities you will meet on this route have all of them a special war history, and you will meet a lot of military cemeteries, monuments and fortifications, or rather ruin of them, until you reach Laon, with its beautiful Gothic Cathedral. Highlights of this trip are the Monument to the Dead and the Historial de la Grande Guerre in Peronne, the Basilica in Saint Quentin and the splendid 13th century Notre Dame Cathedral of Laon, as well as the medieval city and the Citadelle.

Your way on the Via Francigena is made easy by sign posting, the red and white strips. Also, in our holiday pack is included detailed walking notes and maps making navigation even easier.

As you are entering in Somme, a French department which is famous for its WW battles, you will follow an easy route, mainly walking on quiet roads, and sometimes on farm tracks. In Peronne, there is some highlights which at least deserve to be seen, as the Monument to the Dead, the Historial de la Grande Guerre, or the Porte de Bretagne.

16Km, +149 m / -141 m. While you enter in Aisne, you are still following farm tracks and minor roads. But your rural landscape is now scattered with some woodlands. St Quentin is a more or less large town, where you will find all the facilities you could need. You must see the imposing 12th century basilica before you leave.

23Km, +309 m / -257 m: After few kilometres on minor roads crossing farmlands, you will enter in the forest of Saint Gobain, where you will walk on pleasant tracks or quiet roads until the village of Cessiere. There is a stiff climb near the Abbaye of St Nicolas, which will lead you to a beautiful view of the Abbaye and the forest.

14km, +141 m / -62 m: The last day of this section is short and easy. You will mainly walk on quiet roads until Laon, a middle town with a full range of facilities. In Laon, you can’t miss the Notre Dame Cathedral, as well as the Citadelle. You also have to see the Chemin des Dames, one of the most sadly famous battle of the World War I, close to Laon.

As the abilities of everybody are different, it’s important that you decide on a holiday which best suits your own needs and capabilities. You should take some time to look over our grading system so you can decide which holiday is best for you!


How do we grade?
When grading our holidays we take 3 main factors into consideration: Distance, Gradient and Trail Type (i.e. mountain track, forest road, surfaced road, etc.)
Our Easy walking and cycling holidays are best for families with young children. With older children, experience and fitness level should be considered when deciding on a holiday.




Leisurely(1,2)
• Time: Under 5 hours per day on average.
• Gradient: Gentle, no steep climbs
• Trail Type: Walking path, easily accessible
• Suitable for: Everybody. Some easy preparation walks should increase your enjoyment.


Stimulating(3,4)
• Time: 5 to 7 hours / less than 20km per day on average
• Gradient: Up to 1000m ascent per day on average, possibility of some steep climbing
• Trail Type: Walking paths, mountain trails, not technically difficult
• Suitable for: Moderate level of fitness required. Some weekend walks of around 3-4 hours should help your preparation.


A Challenge (5)
• Time: Days can be over 7 hours / 20km
• Gradient: Days can be more than 1000m, some steep climbing
• Trail Type: Walking paths, mountain trails, can be technically difficult
• Suitable for: Good level of fitness required. Previous experience would be best. Regular weekend walks of 4-5 hours or more are advisable in the months leading up to your holiday. These should include some mountain walks.

To Arras


1 - The best way to get to Arras is to flight to Paris, and then to take a train to Arras.  There is 3 main airports in Paris. If you fly with Ryanair, you will land in Paris Beauvais Airport, which is outside of Paris. You would have to take a shuttle to Paris (http://www.aeroportbeauvais.com/bus.php?lang=eng), and then the train to Arras (http://www.raileurope.com/index.html). If you are flying with EasyJet/Aer Lingus, or other companies, you will arrive in Charles de Gaulle Airport or Orly Airport. Both of them are really close to the capital and are served by public transports.


2 - You can also fly to Charleroi Airport, in Belgium, and then take a 2h train to Arras (http://www.raileurope.com/index.html)


From Laon


Once again, the best way is to fly from Paris. You can take the train from Laon (http://www.raileurope.com/index.html), the journey won’t cost take more than 2hours, and won’t cost more than 25€pp. Once you are in Paris, you can get public transports to get to your airport, and if you need to go to Paris Beauvais airport, you have to take a shuttle (http://www.aeroportbeauvais.com/bus.php?lang=eng).
